Imagine going to school in paradise. Picture yourself taking classes in an island locale, where the temperature is almost always 82 degrees. Envision yourself sitting on the beach, listening to the waves crash on the shore as the gentle trade winds blow through your hair, while studying for a mid-term exam. Sounds relaxing – doesn’t it? For the students lucky enough to attend one of the four year schools in Aruba, this dream is a reality. Tucked into the Lesser Antilles islands of the Caribbean, Aruba is an island paradise that is usually thought of as a vacation destination. Few people make the connection between Aruba and education, but for those wishing to study somewhere that the sand can cover their feet, there is no better location.

This arid, warm island country is a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The educational system of Aruba is based upon the Dutch model, with all levels of education funded by the government for Aruban citizens. After completing primary and secondary education, Aruban citizens can choose to attend one of the four year schools in Aruba, the University of Aruba or the Instituto Pedagogico Arubano (IPQ) or Teacher’s Training Institute, as it is known. Students attending the University of Aruba can choose from a degree in law, finance, economics, and hospitality or tourism management.

As with all of the Caribbean islands, tourism is a major source of revenue for the island of Aruba. Aruba is a major destination for many visitors, young and old. Honeymooners, spring breakers and families alike all wash up upon the shores of Aruba and stay in one of her many resorts. As a key department in one of the four year schools in Aruba, the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management prepares Aruban students for an exciting career in Hospitality Management. With this degree, graduates can look forward to an exciting career helping to grow the number one industry in Aruba – tourism.

Not many people outside of Aruba ever think about going to college in Aruba. Although admission is fairly low, the four year schools in Aruba have a lot to offer their students. With enrollment hovering around 300, the University of Aruba offers an intensely personal and intimate educational opportunity. Located in the capital of Aruba, Oranjestad, it offers an exceptional opportunity for the youth of Aruba to obtain a high quality education, which can help them succeed in the industries of Aruba.

In the future, I think there would be an increasing number of students in the universities of the island. Adjusting in Aruba may not be difficult because the locals are hospitable. Do they have vocational courses in college?

None
