Resistance fighter in the Second World War
Segundo Jorge Adelberto "Boy" Ecury was born in Oranjestad on 23 April 1922. He was studying in the Netherlands when the Second World War broke out, and joined the Dutch resistance against the German occupation.
In November 1944 he was betrayed and arrested in Rotterdam. Despite torture he did not give away the members of his group. On 6 November 1944, aged 22, he was executed by firing squad at the Waalsdorpervlakte near The Hague.
Remembering Boy Ecury
- A bronze statue of Boy Ecury was unveiled in Oranjestad in 1949.
- In 2003 the Dutch film "Boy Ecury", directed by Frans Weisz, told the story of his father's search for his son after the war.
- His sister Nydia Ecury became a well-known poet and writer.
