An autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Since 1 January 1986 Aruba has been an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a status known as Status Aparte. Aruba governs its own internal affairs, while matters such as defence and foreign affairs are handled at Kingdom level.
How Aruba is governed
- Head of state: King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands
- Governor: Alfonso Boekhoudt, the King's representative in Aruba since 2017
- Parliament: the Staten, with 21 seats, elected every four years
- Prime Minister: Mike Eman (AVP), in office since March 2025
Recent elections
In the general election of December 2024 the AVP won 9 seats, MEP 8, FUTURO 3 and PPA 1. The AVP and FUTURO formed a coalition government led by Mike Eman. The next elections are expected in 2028.
